Cats are famous for their ability to do what they like, regardless of all circumstances. During World War II, hundreds of dogs received awards for saving people by pulling out the wounded, laying communication cables, and even throwing themselves under tanks with grenades and other explosive devices. Dogs also performed feats in peacetime.
What canine deeds are considered the most outstanding? Several feats accomplished by these animals have become known to people around the world.
Sled dog Balto
The story of the feat of Balto, the dog that saved the whole city, is known to everyone. This incident occurred in 1925 in Alaska, in the small town of Nome, where an epidemic of diphtheria occurred. The situation quickly became critical, the toxoid and drugs needed to save lives ceased to be enough, but there were nowhere to take new ones from. Lost in the snow, the town was on the verge of destruction, because it was impossible to pick up planes and send them for medicine because of the storm. Then they decided to transport the serum to Nenana, another town 1085 km from the scene of the tragedy, and from there it was necessary to take the drugs on dog teams.
A dog cart driver drove out for drugs, but on the way back he lost consciousness - a load of life-saving drugs was 50 miles from Noma. Then the leader of the team dog Balto took the lead and took the driver and cargo to the city, despite the storm. The sled dog saved the city, the epidemic was stopped. In honor of this feat, dog races “Mercy Race” are held annually.
Lifeguard Barry
Saint Bernards are a whole breed of rescue dogs, they are associated with avalanche-hazardous areas of the Alps, rubble, a first-aid kit with a red cross on its side and a barrel of potion, which is also tied to the dog’s neck. This large breed appeared at the monastery of St. Bernard, in the highlands of the Swiss Alps, where it became the personification of saving people from snow captivity. The dog is not at all afraid of snow and cold because of its dense fur, and its scent and hearing make it possible to detect people who are deeply snow-covered by rubble.
The most famous Alpine lifeguard on four legs was St. Bernard Barry, who served at the monastery and saved people in the early 19th century. They say that he saved 40 people, including a boy who got into the cave, whom the dog found, warmed and took home. Today it is not known how the career of this rescuer ended - someone says that the 41st rescued shot him, mistaking him for a wolf. But other people claim that he served at the monastery to a very old age. From then to this day, the monastery should always have a St. Bernard named Barry - this has become a tradition.
Minesweeper Dzhulbars
The dog Dzhulbars got great fame. His exploits were rated so highly that they took the dog to the 1945 parade. The dog was carried in Stalin's overcoat; he was in the arms of Alexander Mazorin, the chief military dog handler of the Land of Soviets. The dog served in the mine search service.Despite his outbred nature, Djulbars possessed a unique scent and penetrating mind. He found 468 mines, about 150 shells, saving people and unique architectural monuments. The dog was able to clear Kiev Vladimir Cathedral, Prague castles and Palaces above the Danube, as well as Vienna cathedrals.
Interesting fact: it is believed that Dzhulbars was a shepherd. But this is not true. Heroic service with such results was carried out by a simple mutt.
Sanitary Mukhtar
In wartime, dogs actively helped orderlies in their difficult task of saving the wounded. Mukhtar, who performed such work, managed to save more than 400 people. Also, this dog saved his guide, as Corporal Zorin, as he received a shell shock, and he could hardly have survived without the help of his faithful dog. Dogs - orderlies determined whether a person was alive, and finding the wounded, they brought him into consciousness and helped to move to a safe place. Thus, a huge number of human lives were saved.
Faithful Hachiko
Loyalty, devotion to dogs knows no bounds, and this was once again proved by the feat of Hachiko. A film was even shot in honor of the dog. The dog was born in 1923, it belonged to the Akita Inu breed, and as a puppy it was presented to a man named Hideasaburo Ueno, who was a professor. She was so attached to her master that she accompanied him every day to the train, and then, in the evening, she met at the station to drive back home. However, one sad day, the man did not return - he had a heart attack, and they could not save him.
The dog was 18 months old, however, the concept of devotion was already fully formed. Hachiko returned to the station and waited for the right time, even after the relatives of the deceased tried to take him to him. For 9 years the dog was waiting for the owner, and no one knows how he felt at those moments when he again came to the station at the right time. By the time the dog died, he was already known throughout the country, the day of his death was the day of national mourning.
Modern heroine Elga
Sapper dog Elga is a German shepherd born in 2001 and serving until 2012. She saved dozens and hundreds of lives, going with her master, a dog handler, on dangerous business trips to Dagestan, Chechnya. With its help, many objects were cleared, a flair - the usual dog and professional - did not fail the heroine. The service was not just given to the dog; for the first time it came under fire, it lost puppies, having given birth to them prematurely - Elge had to endure so much stress. But then she learned to calmly relate to shooting, to lie down on the ground with these sounds and wait for further commands. In 2012, Yelga was blown up by a mine, injured, which severely damaged her health, and then died. A monument is erected on her grave.
Thus, dogs are capable of incredible feats, their loyalty and devotion knows no equal. Moreover, cases of manifestations by dogs of heroism are not at all limited to this list. Dogs risked and sacrificed themselves for the sake of people hundreds, thousands of times. No wonder they sometimes erect monuments.
