In the territory of North America, and more precisely in the northern states of the USA and Canada. There they met an unusual bear whose fur was completely gray. That's why Grizzly got his name, which means a gray bear.
He practically does not differ in anything except his size and coat color from the brown bear, who lives in Eurasia. If you look closely, the wool does not resemble a gray color, since it is brown in color.
The appearance of the grizzly
People, populating new lands, gradually pushed the bears to the north. This animal is used to living in cold climates. But even in severe latitudes, people did not give the bear a quiet life, since they found gold in Alaska and thousands of people went there to get rich.
It was in such a period that the struggle of people and a bear for territory began. A man mercilessly destroyed the enormous at first peace-loving bear. But fighting for his place, the bear very often attacked a person. That is why he is considered one of the most ferocious and unpredictable predators of the planet.. Today, the number of these bears is growing very quickly, so once a year, hunters are allowed to shoot the grizzly in order to protect the lives of people.
Meeting people with this predator is very dangerous. You can imagine its huge size:
- Growth at the withers about a meter;
- The weight of a grizzly is about half a ton;
- Length over 2 meters;
- Huge curved claws are 7 cm long;
Grizzly Bear Food
The diet of the bear is very diverse. We can say that the grizzly bear eats almost everything. He eats berries, tree shoots, various fruits. Also, the bear does not refuse frogs, insects, bird eggs. One of the great bear’s favorite treats is fish. Bears are often seen on fast-moving rivers during spawning. It is very interesting to watch how huge bears quickly snatch fish out of the water and throw it ashore.
The bear does not refuse meat. That's just he hunts mainly on sick or old big game. It can also attack inexperienced young herbivores. He loves honey very much. But there is one problem. The huge curved claws of an adult bear do not allow bears to climb trees. Therefore, delicious honey can become a treat only for young cubs, who can still climb trees.
Lifestyle
Grizzly bear is very aggressive. However, he is fearless. When meeting with the enemy, the grizzly bear, like all bears, stands on its hind legs and roars deafeningly. With these actions, he shows his tremendous physical strength and psychologically intimidates his enemy. Having a large body mass, the bear moves silently and can get very close to the victim.
Almost all bears have poor eyesight. The same poor vision and grizzly. But he has a subtle scent. In the wind, he smells very far. A grizzly bear has a great starting speed, though he cannot run fast for a long time. He also swims well and can swim across a narrow river.
This bear leads a lonely lifestyle. Only once a year couples meet to continue offspring. Males live in large territories and strictly guard them from fellow tribesmen. They rise to their hind legs and try to leave their footprints in the trees with huge claws. Hunters told how a young male wandered into someone else's territory and saw huge scars from the claws of the owner on a tree. The bear stood on its hind legs and tried to reach for the tracks. But he did not get them. Then the young male pressed his ears and ran away, as the owner of this land was much stronger.
During the day, the bear usually rests, but at night it goes in search of food. Especially in the fall, before hibernation, he should gain more weight! After all, winter lies ahead, and you need to accumulate fat for many months.
Depending on the climatic zones, grizzlies hibernate in different autumn months. But basically it is October or November. Bears wake up in March, sometimes in April. Females with cubs sleep more. But old bears can wake up very early, they turn into connecting rods. Then people need to be very careful. In winter, there is not enough food, and therefore bears can go into the settlements of people, and restore their order there.
